Challenge: Beyond the “Spaghetti Logic”
-
- High-Stakes Scrutiny: The project required a robust business model for a new hospital in Shanghai that could withstand the intense due diligence of joint venture (JV) partners, financial analysts, and global banks.
- Technical Debt: The existing model was plagued by “spaghetti logic” and broken links to non-existent workbooks, making it impossible to audit or trust.
- Multidimensional Complexity: The business needed to model phased service rollouts (Specialised Care Services) across different timelines, each with unique staffing, OPEX, and CAPEX requirements.
- Currency & Regulatory Barriers: The model had to handle multi-currency reporting (RMB, USD, and AUD) and complex ROI/NPV/IRR calculations for international stakeholders.
Solution: The Bespoke Financial Architecture
Analytical Models rebuilt the model from the ground up, moving away from simple tabs to a modular, driver-based engine:
-
- Phased Specialty Modularization: We developed a structure that allowed for the phased introduction of medical specialties. This meant that as a new ward or clinic was “toggled” on, the model automatically scaled the associated staffing requirements and startup costs.
- Hierarchical Named Ranges: To ensure transparency, all calculations used structured, hierarchical naming conventions. This allowed JV partners to quickly trace the “DNA” of a calculation back to its source assumptions without getting lost in cell references.
- Dynamic Driver Control: We implemented centralized “Operational” and “Startup” driver sheets, allowing stakeholders to flex key variables—such as patient volumes, length of stay, and diagnostic mix—to see immediate impacts on the P&L and ROI.
- Bank-Grade Financial Reporting: The solution included automated P&L, KPI, and ROI summaries tailored to the specific reporting requirements of international financial institutions.
Outcome: Securing the Partnership
-
- Instant JV Credibility: The structured approach allowed the JV partner to satisfy themselves of the model’s accuracy quickly, removing a major hurdle to the investment.
- Unprecedented Flexibility: Management could now model hundreds of “What-If” scenarios—such as changing the sequence of specialty launches—with total confidence in the integrity of the data.
- Audit-Ready Integrity: By delivering a model with clear data flow and a built-in glossary and version control, Analytical Models provided a “single source of truth” for the entire project lifecycle.
